Southern Arkansas University, or SAU for short, formerly known as Southern State College, Magnolia A&M, and Third District Agricultural School, is a public four-year institution located in Magnolia, which is the county seat of Columbia County, situated in the US state of Arkansas, having a population estimated at a number of more than 10 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census. The City of Magnolia is best known for the fact that it is home to the World's Largest Charcoal Grill and the World Championship Steak Cookoff, part of the Magnolia Blossom Festival, and Southern Arkansas University, as well.
SAU was established in 1909, by an Act of the Arkansas Legislature, being founded as a district agricultural high school for southwest Arkansas, first starting as Third District Agricultural School, which was quickly shortened by students to TDAS, the institution adopting its current name in July, 1976, the name changing being approved by the Board of Higher Education, in accordance with Act 343 of the General Assembly of 1975.
Athletics
Southern Arkansas' athletic teams are known as the Muleriders (men) and Lady Muleriders (women), who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Gulf South Conference, in various sports, including in tennis, baseball and football, sports in which they've made most of their notable achievements, in 1953 and 1954, the tennis team winning the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference in both singles and doubles, being invited by the NCAA to represent their district in their National Tennis Championships in 1953, the baseball team winning the the Gulf South Conference championship, in 2006 and 2009, prior to the 2009 season, the football team having a ''win portfolio'' of 4 AIC championships and 1 GSC Championship.
